How to Avoid Crashing and Burning during Growth

Pop quiz. Who said the following?

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”.

  1. Gary Vee
  2. Benjamin Franklin
  3. Richard Williams
  4. All of the above

The original quote belongs to Benjamin Franklin.

But I do remember it from a different context.

I recently saw the movie King Richard starring Will Smith.

It tells the story of the Williams sisters.

At the center of the story is their father Richard’s role in their rise to tennis success.

One of the ways he instilled discipline in them was his emphasis on planning.

He told the Williams’ sisters Franklin's famous quote repeatedly.

I am not a fan of quotes but Franklin’s quote is super relevant in business.

Speaking of failing to plan, here is an excellent way to crash and burn during growth in your business.

Step 1: Do everything yourself.

Marketing and sales.

Onboarding your clients.

Delivering all the client work yourself.

Doing your books.

Hiring and managing people.

Then managing projects.

Documenting and automating your processes.

Are you having fun yet?

Step 2: Do it all, with mediocrity.

It’s not like you can be effective at doing all of this work yourself.

Each of the above areas in your business will eat up hours of your time.

Try to do it all yourself?

You’ll have to compromise on something.

Usually, it's the quality of your work.

Or less time with your family.

At the end nothing gets done at all.

Step 3: Keep doing the same thing over and over again.

Keep doing what you're doing.

Hustle and grind because it’s popular on Instagram.

No worries.

Soon enough burnout will start creeping in.

But you could do the opposite.

You could focus only on what matters most.

Things that steer your business in the right direction.

Work that helps you grow more.

You can leave the stuff that can set up your business to work without you to us.

Once you have your business processes documented?

Your manual workflows automated?

Your team is all clear on who does what by when?

They are all on board to run your business systems for you?

With your processes and projects organized?

Working seamlessly together?

While your team optimizes your processes for scale?

Then all you have to do is focus on your business growth, and make your clients happy.

Everything else is being handled.

But even if you never work with me?

It is your job as the business owner to decide what you plan to focus on.

Especially during a time of growth when a lot is happening in your business.
